Evaluation: Impactful data through another must have System
Yes, another system. Yes, I sound like a broken record again.
Yet hear me out.
In the world of nonprofits, accountability is not just a buzzword; it's a fundamental principle that drives organizational success and impact. One of the key mechanisms that enables nonprofits to uphold accountability is the use of evaluation systems.
In this blog post, we'll delve into how evaluation systems play a pivotal role in fostering accountability for nonprofits.
Defining Accountability in Nonprofits:
At its core, accountability in nonprofits refers to the organization's responsibility to its stakeholders, including donors, beneficiaries, partners, and the community it serves. It involves being transparent about the allocation of resources, demonstrating the impact of programs, and fulfilling promises made to achieve the organization's mission.
The Role of Evaluation Systems:
Evaluation systems act as the backbone of accountability in nonprofits. These systems involve a structured and systematic approach to assessing the organization's activities, strategies, and outcomes. They provide a way to measure progress and effectiveness against predetermined goals, ensuring that the nonprofit's actions align with its mission and that it remains true to its core values.
The Trifecta of Questions to Evaluate a Nonprofit:
Asking the following three questions about the foundational and programatic activities will allow you to build a complete evaluation system.
BEST PRACTICE
Answer the following questions for every line item on your logic model.
1. CONSISTENCY: To what extent are program staff members and volunteers implementing program components with the intended regularity and depth?
2. PARTICIPATION: To what extent does each program staff, volunteer, client take part in or receive the intended activities or experiences?
3. QUALITY: To what degree is the program being implemented to a desired standard?
Example of Evaluation Questions: Line item on logic model- Weekly pre-school story hours
1. CONSISTENCY: What percentage of planned pre-school story hours took place as intended? and were facilitated by intended staff member or volunteer?
2. PARTICIPATION: What percentage of staff or volunteers facilitated the pre-school story hours as intended?
3. QUALITY: What percentage of pre-school story hour programming were facilitated as planned? What percentage of participants shared they enjoy the story hours? Will come back to another story hour?

Collect the Data
Data isn’t just collected to see what you need to change. Data shows what you need to change but it also shows all of the amazing work you are doing too! These accomplishments should be highlighted to tell your organization’s story, report to the board, secure more funding and reassure you that your time and effort is truly making an impact!
Collecting data doesn’t have to be some crazy scientific process.

Accountability goes beyond financial transparency; it's about showing real-world impact. Evaluation systems enable nonprofits to measure outcomes and assess how their programming is making a difference. This information not only validates the organization's efforts, allows for easy reporting and story telling but also informs future decisions, allowing the nonprofit to refine its strategies for greater impact.
